Cole & Son
Cole & Son was founded in 1875 by John Perry, the son of a Cambridgeshire merchant. At the time the company was based in Islington, north London, an area known for the 190 printing companies that operated there in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the 19th century Cole & Son was the main printer for all the major companies of the time, including Jeffrey & Co, Sanderson and Shand Kydd. In addition to high-quality prints, the company was known for supplying beautiful and innovative designs. In 1941 the company was purchased by A P Cole, owner of Cole & Son (Wallpapers) Ltd, with showrooms and offices on Mortimer Street in central London.(more)The now-named Cole & Son includes designs produced by J C Crace & Son for the decoration of many stately homes, palaces, castles and theatres throughout Britain and abroad, including A W Pugin's wallpaper designs for the Palace of Westminster. The merger of the two firms in 1938 meant that Cole & Son became the custodians of the most important collection of wallpapers in Britain. In 1949, the director of the design department set up one of the first print studios in Europe, responding to the new revolutionary movement in modern design, which produced the imposing wallpaper designs of the 1950s and 1960s.
Today, the Cole & Son consists of approximately 1,800 wallpaper designs, 350 digital print designs and a vast amount of original wallpaper designs, representing all styles of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Among these are some of the most important historical wallpaper designs in the world that adorn many historic buildings, such as Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament.
This magnificent archive is sometimes the source of new designs for the collections. The designs are carefully selected, adapted and coloured by our designers and printed according to the original historical standards.
